Atelier September

Atelier September has got to be one of the most beautiful cafés in Copenhagen – and also, perhaps the most instagrammed one. But look at those marble surfaces, big windows and that vintage counter – who can blame us instagammers for going a little crazy in there? The bright and airy room used to house an antique store and even though Atelier September is now a café serving delicious breakfast and lunch, the original Picasso-posters on the wall are still for sale.

On the handwritten menu behind the counter you’ll find mostly organic food and despite of its simplicity, the menu offers everything you need to start the day off right: skyr (Icelandic-style yoghurt) with granola, grape with fresh mint, a croissant as buttery and delicious as the ones in Paris, homemade lemonade, matcha tea, coffee and and freshly squeezed juice. For a more brunch-like meal, try some Danish rye bread with either cheese, jam or avocado (served sliced in a very photogenic way like everything else on the menu) or an open faced sandwich with eggs.

Open from 8 am until 6 pm Monday through Saturday, Atelier September also serves lunch and early dinner. Get a spot in the windows, look out at life in Central Copenhagen and enjoy a Salade Caprese, Mozzarella Di Bufala or the Plat du Jour in one of the coolest cafés in Copenhagen these days. Oh, and if you’re around this Summer, don’t forget to try the ‘koldskål’ with strawberries – a Danish Summer dessert classic!

Glyptoteket

The Glypthoteque in Copenhagen is one of the most peaceful places in town and well worth a visit whether you are into sculpture collections or not. This beautiful 19th century building holds an Ancient Mediterranean collection on the first floor, where the majority of these photos are from. The different rooms – both grandiose with marble floors and less dramatic – are all painted in different colors such as green, blue, yellow and red and these walls make picturesque backgrounds for the ancient sculptures.

My favourite spot is the Winter Garden (pictured above) with palm trees and plants everywhere and a beautiful dome ceiling. Here you will also find a café with a view to the garden that serves lunch, cakes and coffee. It is slightly overpriced, but the surroundings couldn’t be any better! In 1996, a new building by world renowned Dansih architect Henning Larsen was added to the museum and if you walk up the stairs to the rooftop terrace, you have an incredible view to the neighbouring Tivoli Gardens and the city center.

Closed on Mondays and free entrance on Sundays.

Restaurant Höst

It is no secret that I am quite a big fan of this place, and anyone who is following along on Instagram will have seen a bunch of photos from Restaurant Höst. But just look at it – can you blame me? The restaurant in Central Copenhagen recently won the award for the best designed restaurant in the world, so I guess I am not the only one smitten with it’s interior design.

Restaurant Höst is a part of the modern Nordic wave here in Copenhagen and with a menu offering three courses at the price of 295 DKK (about 55$) most people can find it in their budget to go here. Unfortunately, I have only had dinner here in low light, which made all the food shots not worth sharing. But the dishes are deliciously composed of local ingredients sometimes mixed in a surprising and bold way and served on beautiful specially designed ceramics from Danish Menu. These days, Höst’s menu sounds like this: Hake 42°, pearl- sago, raw kohlrabi, lemon verbena and salad-cream from mussels as starter; free-range pork neck, yellow peas, asparagus, broccoli, pea-sprouts, smoked cheese, foamy dark lager and browned butter-sauce as main course and rhubarb ice, cold buttermilk soup with vanilla and brown sugar and cake with bog myrtle schnapps as dessert. Although the menu says three courses, they always serve to extra small side courses which makes you feel even better about the price!

I would definitely recommend anyone visiting Copenhagen coming here to get a taste of the Nordic cuisine in a very charming and low-key environment. Remember to book a table a couple of days in advance. Höst is part of a Copenhagen restaurant chain called Cofoco and they’ve got some great places around town – all menus are budget friendly. Check them all out here. Bon appétit!

Grundtvig’s Church

One sunny Monday, I got up early and rode my bike out to the Bispebjerg-area of Copenhagen. This neighbourhood does not have that many sights or attractions, but one place keeps me coming back: Grundtvig’s Church on top of the small hill, Bispebjerg Bakke. This day, I came on a mission to research for a small piece on the church for Cereal Magazine. I sat for a little while with my laptop in the sunlit building and felt really thankful for having the possibly to write for such an amazing magazine (or, their website at least!).  I will let the photos speak for themselves and give you this link where you can read my words and enjoy the amazingly beautiful photos taken by Finn Beales. (The photos is this posts are taken by me – I couldn’t help myself when I saw that beautiful morning light!).

Central hotel

If you have done just the slightest amount of research on where to go in Copenhagen, you have probably already heard about Central Hotel & Café. Lately, this place has been featured in Copenhagen travel guides around the world and after a visit, it’s easy to understand why.

Located in the hip neighbourhood of Vesterbro, this hotel with only one room is actually the smallest one in the world. And what a place! The tiny building consists of a combined coffeeshop/lobby and upstairs you will find a room with a double bed. Non-guests are more than welcome in the cafe, but since it is quite small, you just have to try your luck at getting a seat. In summer months there is outdoor seating as well, which makes room for some more coffee drinking people.

Since the hotel can only accomodate two people at a time, you are bound to get a personal and different experience here. The sweet Cathrine who was behind the counter today told me that guests who book the room also get two bikes (a must when visiting Copenhagen!) and an iPhone during the stay included in the price. An iPhone! That is such a brilliant idea – giving tourists the opportunity to go online whenever they feel like it without having to depend on wifi. I know I would appreciate that when travelling.

When you wake up hungry in the morning, all you have to do is find your way to the café Granola on Værnedamsvej, which is about two minutes from the hotel. Show them your key and you get two large breakfast plates included in the price. Granola is one of the best places for breakfast in the area, so your day in Copenhagen will start in the best way possible.
